Competition Results

Congrats Girls!
This weekend was our first competition and we did fabulous! Madi "Queened" in her category, the trio was named first runner up in their category and Faith got second runner up in her category. It was TOUGH competition but the girls absolutely rocked!
On team day the girls were so excited to perform. Everyone looked great in costume, hair, and make up. It was a new experience for us, but the girls didn't let that stop them from having a blast, whether giggling and practicing in the dressing room or showing off on the dance floor. We placed really well and I am so proud of these girls!

Tears at Dance

This is a quick post, just sharing a sweet moment from dance class. One of my students raised her hand and said, "At school everyone is writing about their special place. Mine is Meize's." I had to bite my tongue to keep from tearing up at the little girl. I know that dance class is for learning technique, choreography and showmanship, but it can also be a "special place" and I'm so glad that our students can find that here. :)

Competition Week Letter to Dancers and Parents

I just want to say to all of my dancers and their parents, Thank You! Thanks for hard work, practicing at home, dedication, support, praise, love, confidence and for having fun along the way. Competition week is stressful, especially because it is some of our dancers' first ever competition. However stressful and scary it may seem, it will all be ok! We are going to do our best this weekend and have so much fun too!
I remember competition time. Practicing my dances extra hard, finding all my costumes and dreaming about performing my best and winning 1st place. That's what we do, we dream big. So whether you are confident, unsure, or downright nervous, know that I believe in you, I have seen what you can do and you are good enough!
 Much Love, Brittney

Solo Preview Night!

Last night we had our first ever solo preview night, and the girls were fabulous! A preview night is where we invite friends and family of our individual competitors (this year we have two soloists and a trio) to watch the girls dance before competition and give the dancers a chance to shake off their competition jitters.
We started off with a Jazz solo by 2nd Grader, Faith, to 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton. She wears an adorable little waitress costume, complete with tray, rag, sequins, hat, and lots of sass! Faith is so flexible and talented and I know she is going to be great this weekend!
Next up was Madison, also a 2nd Grader, she did a lyrical to a cover of I Believe I Can Fly by Bianca Ryan. She wears a gorgeous sparkling blue dress. Her sweet spirit is really inspirational. Madi is a strong little dancer; from her leaps to her turns and her sweet smile, she gave us all the chills. I'm sure she'll win the judges hearts!
We wrapped things up with the character jazz trio by Alexa, Ansley, and Jayda that I have bragged so much about... it's to Everybody Wants to Be a Cat by Psapp. These girls all have a furry leotard with little sequin and marabou accents. The costumes are just as slinky and sassy as the three dancers and their hard work has most definitely paid off. I am excited to see them shine this weekend.
I am so glad to have worked with these five girls and I am proud to take them to competition, they are such good representatives of Meize's Dance Studio. GOOD LUCK LADIES! We love you. :)

(Pictures and competition posts to come this weekend.)

Happy Wednesday/My Kitchen Is For Dancing

This is so true! So many mornings I find myself distracted by beautiful music and I just can't help dancing around, my husband has grown used to it.
I think I would also need a towel that says "My bathroom is for dancing." Because honestly that is most often where I end up, in front of the mirror, jamming out. It is such a good way to relieve stress!
Happy Wednesday!

Ozians and Munchkins

Friday night, the 5th/6th Grade dancers and I went to support our dancers in The Wizard of Oz. Our very own Eve was an adorable Ozian and Soldier, she was FABULOUS! She has worked so hard and it certainly paid off, we loved going to see her shine.
Ella was also featured in the production as a Munchkin and a Poppy. She has always been such a performer, it was fabulous to see her on stage and loving the spotlight.
We laughed a lot during the play and had a great time. We even sent Eve a "Treat From the Seat," which is a little note of encouragement and love you can send to your performer back stage.

After the play we met up with Eve and went to Maggie Moo's for an ice cream, the girls had so much fun together. I felt so proud of all of them for being such good friends. These girls are learning valuable lessons about life, friendship, and dance and I am so blessed to be a part of it.

I am team Kellie Pickler all the way! This made me cry! Kellie and Derek Rumba
Happy Monday!

How To Do A Cart"will"

Ansley choose to do "How to do a Cart"will" for her How-To assignment in class, other kids did "How to Make a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich" or "How to Make Hot Choklit."
I would expect nothing less from our sweet little dancer. She hardly enters a room without a leap or kick and of course, cartwheels.
This week we get a peek at an adorable ballet birthday party and another dancer will be featured! Stay Tuned!

2 Minutes of Death

Happy Spring Break to all my sweet dancers! Three of our first graders spent today rehearsing their trio. It's a slinky little jazz number with lots of technique. We've been working on choreography for about a month and the girls have practiced hard. However, after much time spent today cleaning and recleaning I decided to do their dance, full out, and have it recorded...
Let's just say when the tempo picked up it was almost too much for this 17 weeks prego dance teacher... Lesson learned: if they are having a hard time, sometimes it really is because the choreography is too difficult! These are three of my most dedicated and naturally talented students so we are just going to push them to get it BUT come competition time, those judges "betta rec-a-nize" the difficulty in this routine behind the fabulous costumes and smiles.
I'll post a video after competition in April/May... You won't want to miss it.

Twisted Wave

I use this app for all of my music editing. It's called twisted wave and it's available in the app store and is very user friendly while still featuring all the functions and tools that I need.
I have edited at least 100 songs and this app makes it so easy. You can share your edited songs via email but my favorite way to share is to upload directly to Dropbox and email from there. That way the song is still in my Dropbox, available at anytime.

Trio Song 2013

I am so excited to finally share the song for this year's trio. I have mentioned it before but didn't say who the artist was. Well we are officially using Everybody Wants to Be a Cat by Psapp. The girls will have furry leos,  tails, kitty mittens, ears and sparkling whiskers. We have even incorporated an old trash can and crates into the dance and it is SO FABULOUS. The girl's first competition is on April 26th so I'll be sure to post a video. It's about to get sassy in here, folks!

If you are wondering what the girls did last year it was Something's Got a Hold of Me by Christina Aguilera from Burlesque.

Little Buns Pinterest Board

I have started a Pinterest board dedicated to all things little, little buns, little girls, little costumes, and more! Little Buns is a collection of the sweet simple things about life and dance.
Little moments can easily get lost among the hustle and bustle of studio life but this helps me to keep an eye out for those tiny things that can mean the most, and by things I mean dancers.

Meet the Dancers: Ludlow Ladies

Brea shakes it during "Fa La La"
I have worked with the "Ludlow Ladies" for several years. I first met Brea when she was 5. It was my first year teaching dance and she brought a ray of sunshine with her to every class. My sister, Cassidy, teaches Brea now and knows how fun it is to work with someone to is 100% herself all the time. "You never know how Brea is going to show up to class," Cass said, "She could be crazy, happy, silly, sad, anything. And really that's the fun of working with her." Brea is 8 years old now. She loves playing with friends, listening to her iPod, singing, and dancing.  She is a very special girl and loves everyone. Brea loves to perform and really puts on a show when she's on stage!

Brooklynn performs "Good Time"
Working with Brea, I met her family and came to love the people who help Brea be Brea everyday. Little did I know, that one day I would get to teach her older sister, Brooklynn, who I fondly refer to as my "Sanity Girl," she truly keeps me sane some days. She's only 11 years old, but I swear she is going on 18- and that we could be best friends in another life. After a long day in the studio, Brooklynn always brings me back to reality with her sassy and positive personality. She reminds me of what is truly important- having fun! Brooklynn's hobbies include dancing, hanging out with friends, roller skating, and most of all READING!!  She is a great big sister and loves to baby-sit her siblings and kids around the neighborhood.  She gets good grades and is looking forward to middle school.
Brea and Brooklynn are so unique but some things they share are beautiful smiles and gracious attitudes. Dancers who practice hard and perform without holding back, like the "Ludlow Ladies," are headed for success. Three cheers for two of my favorite students!
Ready for the recital!

Thanks to Natalie Ludlow for providing pictures and for sharing your girls with us.

Pinterest Inspiration Board

Check out my inspiration board, Glamour Us, on Pinterest. It's a place for beautiful hair and make up ideas that we can use at the studio. I wish I was talented enough to actually DO some of these styles, luckily I don't have to be.
What do you think of dance hair? Do you have a go to style? I would love any tips/tricks!

Attend Dance. 3 Things Your Dancer is Missing Out On

Get it? Today I'm thinking about attendance. Sometimes, I know, it is just not possible to get your dancer to dance... you're out of town, he/she is sick, scheduling conflict, I get it! But before you decide to let them miss for no reason, think about what THEY'RE missing:
  1. Choreography. Making up for missed choreography is SO hard, everyone else knows the dance but still time has to be spent re-teaching for just one dancer.
  2. Technique. Its the fundamentals that we practice week after week that build your dancer's ability. Each hour that she misses out on technique she is literally falling behind. The dancers that are in class are getting better by the hour.
  3. Discipline. The time that is spent in class is meticulous corrections, repetition, and encouragement. Dancers who force themselves to be in class each week have what it takes to succeed, to be on a team at the studio, high school, college, and professional level.
Don't let your dancer be the absentee! She's missing out on so much in the long run.

Meet the Dancers: Ansley

Ansley showing off in Chicago
Ansley and her brothers
Ansley is 6 years old. She loves to dance, color, play games (she has wicked Memory Match skills) and play with her kitty, Lucy. As a dancer, she is strong and flexible. As a student, she is wild and daring. As a sister, that's right she's my little sister, she is sweet and loving. At dance she gives lots of dirty looks and rolls her eyes but at home she's full of kisses and hugs.

She has two sisters and two brothers who let her sleep with them because she is scared of the dark and can't sleep alone. She likes bedtime stories, getting tucked in, and learning Spanish. She doesn't like brushing her teeth or cleaning her room.

DIY

Living in Cedar City, it is sometimes hard to get the things we need for dance. Tights, costumes, shoes, everything has to be ordered in. That's where we get crafty. We have made our own accessories and props and had local seamstresses custom make our costumes.

Trio Inspiration

Click Here to see one of my favorite trios. It's to Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend, which is overused but still adorable. I have watched this a million times because of the sass, class, and technique. I can't wait to start working on a trio with my own girls, Ansley, Lexi, and Jayda to Every'body Wants To Be a Cat. Happy Monday!

Why Blog About Dance?

If you don't know who I am, you might wonder: Why blog about dance? What is there to blog about? Well, I have enjoyed dancing and performing all my life and now I enjoy teaching others to dance. It is something that I love and am passionate about. My Communication 4600 class is requiring me to keep a blog and post regularly throughout this semester. It sounds challenging but I'm sure I'll enjoy being able to share my experiences as a dancer and teacher.
